In the News: Placemaking in Hereford

An invitation to talk about placemaking in Hereford!

The Baltimore County Planning Department we will be hosting Placemaking Focus group sessions with local chambers of commerce to learn about what community groups/organizations are looking for to help support their placemaking efforts in the County.

What exactly is ‘placemaking’? Picture a New England town: there’s something about a small green park and a gazebo that says this is a special place.

Little towns with such places definitely seem a little more special…and towns without them are just a drive-through on the highway.

The idea is to create iconic spaces in communities large and small—sometimes just a bench with flowers, sometimes something much bigger—to support a sense of place and of belonging. Hence place-making!

Some of you know Katie, with Manor Mill. She has dreamed for years of such a special place in Hereford. We have a perfect possible location at the BCPL (the public library): very visible, public land, flat green space, and parking is right there.

Baltimore County is inviting community groups and individuals interested in placemaking to three sessions: one each Weds and Thurs morning in Towson, and one Jan 13 via Webex.

Please consider going to one of them, and let Riley Sullivan (rsullivan3@baltimorecountymd.gov) know via email if you can attend one of the sessions—and please forward to anyone in Hereford you think might be interested!

Placemaking Focus Group Session (Virtual)

  • Tuesday January 13th 11am

Description:

These focus group sessions are being held to inform the Baltimore County Placemaking Toolkit, a community resource project led by the Planning Department.  We are convening community leaders, chambers of commerce, non-profits and other “placemakers” from around the County to be in dialogue about local placemaking efforts.  The goal of these conversations is twofold:

1.) To learn where there are gaps in knowledge and expertise among placemaking practitioners in the County – ie: what kind of guidance is most needed? What should we focus on with this toolkit to be of most use to the community?

2.) To learn from your experiences as folks already doing placemaking work here in the County to inform the final Toolkit and resource guides hosted on a dedicated and publicly accessible County website.
