Officer Reports:
President: Al welcomed everyone to the meeting and supplied an agenda.
Secretary: Minutes were approved as written; and changes let Kathy Wheatley know
Treasurer: Ending balance @ 10/31/06 is $11,525.47
Old Business/New Business:
- Rose has resigned from the Directory Committee. We thank her for all her donated time in producing a beautiful piece. The Directory is ready for mailing. Al will get with Kathy Wheatley and Linda, our Monkton Postmaster, to logistically plan the delivery. Bills were sent to advertisers; please pay upon receipt. A small supply of Directories was available at the meeting for HZBA member use.
- Al recommended that next year each committee have a vice-chair.
Committee Reports:
- Community Affairs: Dave has been working with Hereford High School's FBLA to build a relationship. Now that elections are over, he may be able to bring in Wade Kach to speak with us on a legislative report.
- Directory: Noted above
- Fall Fest: Much discussion on 2006's Fall Fest. Diane extended a thank you to all those who participated and/or volunteered in the well-attended event. Over 1000 people attended on Saturday and 500 on Sunday. Many of our members had representation. Traffic in our tent was good, and the location was good. Dianne would like to encourage all zone businesses to participate as it is important to be seen as a group. She noted that some Saturday attendees returned on Sunday to get their last bid in on the Silent Auction items. Many members were there as customers and the HVFD was great. DJ and music in general were a big improvement. As for recommendations for next year: adults with no children look forward to the wine tasking and this year Boordy was not there on Sunday.; some vendors reported they did not sell very much; this date coincided with the Maryland Home & Garden Show; vendors may have been physically "too far" from the action; we may want to combine the Fall Fest with Genesee Valley Fall Fest where activities are already "built-in" to the event. Open discussion was held and it was recommended that next year we include the word "crafts" in the title of the event, and that we work more closely with HVFC. Al is to see if someone from HVFC would like to meet to critique the 2006 event. Paul Cummings voiced that the event is intended to be reminiscent of the old "Fire Hall Field Days." Also, we may need to do more advertising; perhaps a "story" on the event in North County News or the Crier.
- Hospitality: Allison is getting ready for the Holiday Social. Everyone is asked to bring either a dessert or a hors d'oeuvre. Please let Allison know your choice. The event is scheduled for December 14, from 5:00pm to 7:30 pm at the Wheatley Associates' offices. Both floors will be open to the party.
- Membership: Jim Deluca did not attend, however Dianne Fowler indicated Jim was in attendance at the Fall Fest at an HZBA table and obtained some interest from prospective new members. He is to follow-up with them.
- Web Master: Glenn did not attend the meeting as his mother passed away. Kathy Wheatley to send a sympathy card from HZBA. The "yard sale" page is reportedly back on the website; it's free to use!
- Raffle Baskets:BIG, BIG, BIG thanks to John Mays and his wife for again delivering beautiful baskets for raffle at the Fall Fest. There were 217 donations from 52 businesses and 56 items in the Silent Auction-which for its debut was a huge success. Mt. Carmel Pharmacy and Wheatley Associates were the two top ticket selling members, and John thanked them for their support. Half of the tickets sold were into John prior to the event. The total income was $5988.00 ($3168 from the baskets and $2820 from the Silent Auction). There was a motion, seconded and passed to pay expenses out of the income. The distribution of proceeds was voted on and passed as follows: $2000 to HVFC, $1000 to EMS, $1000 to each of the two food banks in the zone. The balance of approximately $700 will be used toward next year's fund raising for charities and/or community activities. John has over five weeks of his personal time in soliciting and gathering items for the baskets. He recommends a committee for the basket raffle, perhaps 3-4 people, and perhaps volunteers from each of the beneficiaries. If others are willing to donate time, John will chair the committee; otherwise he would like to retire from this position.
- Marketing, Communications, Publicity: Pattie is writing an article for the Jeffersonian each month from the minutes. As suggestions for this month it was noted that the Wheatley building has a new tenant on the lower level, Kevin Swanson of State Farm Insurance. Also, the St. James Christmas Shoppe, the Graul's Frozen Turkey Drive, My Secret Garden's Holiday Open House, Kingsdene's Holiday Open House, and the HZBA social were all mentioned. A separate email was sent out to members and friends to remind them of these local holiday events. Finally, the Cluster Food Bank is striving to deliver 40 baskets each for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Donations are needed, welcomed and appreciated.
Open Forum
This is a new addition to our meetings! If time permits we will have a chance to talk about some business issue/items that a member may need help with. For example, Kathy Wheatley was looking for solar powered lights for her signs which were bright enough to show them off now that it gets dark so early. Several recommendations were made from looking to local providers (some even our members) to internet providers. So, bring your issue and we'll see if we can help you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joan Patterson of the Food Bank noted she gets many calls regarding community services hours, which our Baltimore County students need to graduate. If anyone is in need of a volunteer to serve the community, please contact Joan.
